46th German-Nordic Orchestra Week

MAHLER AND FRIENDS

We gladly present the 46th German-Scandinavian Orchestra Week from December 27th, 2021 to January 5th, 2022. The first part of the concert programme focuses on Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. In them, man’s forlornness, the fragility of his soul and an omnipresent nearness to death are thematised, but the beauty of the world and its nature are also sung about. Edvard Grieg’s rarely performed ballad Den Bergtekne and the orchestral song Kom nu hit, död by Jean Sibelius, which is based on a Shakespeare sonnet, also revolve around these motifs; we place these two small masterpieces alongside Gustav Mahler’s great song cycle. The soloist is the young Icelandic baritone Jóhann Kristinsson.
The first half of the concert will be concluded by Sibelius’ brilliant symphonic poem Lemminkäinen zieht heimwärts; it tells the story of the Kalevala hero Lemminkäinen, who is awakened from death by his magical mother and powerfully returns to life.

The main The second part of the concert programme features Igor Stravinsky’s famous Feuervogel Suite from 1919Suite.
